Where is the macaque in deadly planet
Left unchecked, too many horses can negatively affect native fish and wildlife and, as resources dwindle, horses themselves suffer. Current management solutions include fertility control options that require annual treatments rounding up and moving free-ranging horses into long-term holding or adoption facilities.
About half of the horses removed from the range end up in long-term holding, where there are currently over 50, horses. This makes it safer and reduces stress for the animals. Vaccines administered in different muscles can result in different immune responses in people, and we think the same thing happens in horses. So we are partnering with the Bear Valley Ranch in British Columbia on a multi-year project to test the contraceptive efficacy of SpayVac when administered in either the rump or the neck.
Results will hopefully encourage agencies to manage free-ranging horses with SpayVac and eventually phase-out removals from the range. Stay tuned! The Board includes nine members representing a diverse range of stakeholders and interests, and provides advice and recommendations to the Bureau of Land Management and U. Forest Service. Bechert will serve in the research position.

Two white-handed gibbons Hylobates lar and one Bornean white-bearded gibbon H. Primates in managed care are highly social and live in pairs or family groups, so contraception is required to prevent a surplus number of animals.
Reproduction in the females to be treated has been managed previously using hormonal contraceptives, which must be administered frequently and may have adverse side effects when used long-term. SpayVac is a less intrusive alternative and specifically targets the zona pellucida. If successful, SpayVac could provide a minimally disruptive means of managing reproduction of wild primates in zoos and nature reserves.
July 7, Madison, WI. Konik Horse Project Announced. In the spring of , Konik horses were introduced to a World Wildlife Fund floodplain reserve in Austria. Also known as the Polish primitive horse, Koniks are short in height, ranging from These small, semi-feral horses were bred for larger shoulders to improve their value as working horses. Riley says this type of behavior habituates the monkeys to humans, a recipe for trouble. Between to , when the population consisted of roughly animals, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission received 23 reports of primate-inflicted human injury; since that time, the agency has quit keeping records.
Getting attacked by a monkey the size of a miniature poodle is a frightening enough prospect. But that's not all. Earlier this year, scientists from the U. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention discovered that around 30 percent of these monkeys carry herpes B , a rare and highly virulent virus that can be deadly to humans. Only about 50 human cases of herpes B have ever been documented, though as far as we know none of these derived from wild macaques.
In , one year-old research assistant died after accidentally getting bodily fluids from a captive monkey in her eye and contracting the disease. In humans, herpes B—which is closely related to the more well-known human variety, herpes simplex virus —can cause inflammation of the brain and spinal cord leading to severe brain damage or death. But typically, the animals only shed the virus when they are under stress, like during their breeding season.
Walters says she would support efforts to sterilize or relocate the monkeys, but would oppose a management plan that used lethal measures or sold monkeys for use in biomedical research. Though the environmental impact of this small population is unclear, studies elsewhere hint at a cause for concern. Research in Puerto Rico and parts of the Florida Keys, for example, shows the monkeys can have detrimental environmental effects such as destroying mangrove trees, polluting the water, and killing native birds.
In January of this year, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission called on the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, which recently took over management of the park, to put a population-management plan in place. But nobody has decided yet what to do. All rights reserved.
